9 Tips for Interacting with Your Superior

A considerable cause of stress is dealing with your superior at your workplace. Creating a comfortable working relationship is ideal but not always possible due to personality differences or other issues. I’d like to offer you 9 tips for learning the skill of interacting and communicating with your bosses.

Business Meeting

  1. Be Concise: Managers usually have limited time so when you need them for something urgent I recommend getting to the point quickly. - TWEET THIS If you need their attention 5 minutes or longer, ask for scheduled time on their calendar.
  2. Practice Patient: Don’t take things personally. Managers are usually under a lot of pressure. If they’re in an unpleasant mood one day, let it go.
  3. Be Resolution-Focused: Avoid complaining without providing a possible solution. Be willing to help and offer some ideas.TWEET THIS You’ll be showing your boss that you’re trying to be solution-oriented instead of focused on a problem.
  4. Listen Carefully: Often we tune out something our boss or co-workers say in meetings thinking about what we plan to say instead of really hearing the person that is doing the talking. Turn on your active rather than “passive” listening talents. Tune into the ideas and thoughts of your team. - TWEET THIS
  5. Practice Confidence: Come across as confident and capable, rather than nervous and timid. Most communication is non-verbal. Your body language should show that you know what you are talking about, and that you bring value to your company.- TWEET THIS
  6. Get Familiar: Casual conversation goes a long way. Ask how their weekend was, say hello, get to know their preferences.
  7. Meet Frequently: If regularly scheduled meetings are not part of your routine, arrange weekly 1-on-1’s for guidance and support. This provides time each week with your boss, so you can get the direction you need to continue to move forward in your position.
  8. Define Goals and Expectancies: Do you clearly know your role? Ensure that it’s clearly understood and that there are no surprises when it comes time for performance review. Having regular check-ins with your boss will help you strive for and potentially get that promotion you’ve been hoping for. - TWEET THIS
  9. It’s Mutual: Boss and employee relationships are a 2-way street. At the end of the day, you are both human beings that make mistakes and are just trying to make a living. Both people need to put themselves in the other person’s shoes, which builds a strong foundation for your working relationship.
